Buenas Noches!

I would like to give you an update on what we have been doing in Spanish class. As of right now, we have completed our first unit and CFA. The first unit consisted of colors, cognates (words that are similar in 2 languages; for example: Elefante = elephant), and classroom objects.  Please check grades on Infinite Campus.

Last week, we started the verb estar . The verb estar is used for Locations & Emotions (feelings). Students were exposed to a story last week and were expected to show a comic strip for comprehension.

For this week, students are working on their Señor Wooly website material. Señor Wooly is an interactive Spanish website where students are exposed to situations in life (being unprepared for class, asking to go to the bathroom, etc). This Thursday and Friday, students will be working on this website and they are encouraged to work on it at home!

If the students would like to work/study on class work at home, they are encouraged to go to https://quizlet.com/mrclavell/folders and they can see the vocabulary words used in class. At this point, they are working on  The verb estar and Emotions. Everything should be located in the folder titled: The verb estar.

Comunicado a familia de estudintes en le Sección de Heritage (Clavell)

Espero que este bien. Aquí les dejo un “update” de nuestra clase de Español. Los estudiantes del curso “Español como lengua heredada”, han trabajado en lo siguiente.

1. Soy yo Project – proyecto semestral en donde los estudiantes han buscado información y/o dialogado con familiares en casa sobre ​el país de donde proviene la familia, la cuidad de donde nació la familia y una búsqueda en la web sobre el apellido familiar.​​ Regresaremos a este proyecto pronto durante Octubre.

2. Latinoamericanos – La mayoría de mis estudiantes me han preguntado de el rol de los latinoamericanos en los Estados Unidos. En clase, hemos visto un documental titulado “Latino Americans” en donde habla sobre los derechos civiles de los latinos. También los estudiantes han sido expuestos a las siguientes figuras importantes como ​Cesar Chávez, Dolores Huerta, Sal Castro, ​entre otros. Los estudiantes tendrán un mini-proyecto (escritura) sobre este tema durante la semana que viene. 

​3. Mafia – Hemos jugado Mafia en clase, pregúntale al estudiante el significado del juego, que hacemos y como han hecho conexiones con el material discutido en clase!

Non-Heritage First Assessment!

Hola!

For all non-heritage students, their first assessment is at the end of this week!

All 6, 7, and 8th-grade students are currently reviewing for their first CFA (common formative assessment).

Review material by classroom stations:

  1. Numbers
  2. Colors
  3. Commands/Questions (Can I go to the bathroom? song by senorwooly)
  4. Greetings and Basic Conversations
  5. I have/I don’t have (Yo tengo/Yo no tengo)
  6. Classroom objects
  7. Spanish listening in the classroom (No lo tengo Song; Can I go to the bathroom? song)

Comienzo del año escolar (Heritage)

Buenos días!

Los estudiantes de la clase de Español como lengua heredada (Heritage) hemos trabajado en lo siguiente:

  • ¿Porque estamos en una clase “heritage”
  • ¿De dónde vengo?
  • ¿A dónde voy?
  • Si mi familia es de _____________; qué significa?
  • ¿Por qué en los Estados Unidos nos clasifican como latino(a)?
  • Si tengo la clasificación de latino(a), ¿eso significa que ya no soy ______________?

En clase hemos…

  1. usado senorwooly.com para reforzar lectura y destrezas auditivas
  2. buscado sobre nuestra herencia, nuestro escudo de familia y de donde viene nuestros apellidos.
  3. Jugado Mafia y leido parte de la noveletta Tumba por: Mira Carion (en la clase de la Sra. Finesseth)

 

Start of the School Year (Non-Heritage)

Buenos días!!

We’ve had an awesome start to the school year in our Spanish department! Non-Heritage students (students who are not bilingual or have family members that actively speak to them in Spanish at home), we have been reviewing or exposed to the following concepts:

  1. Basic Phrases and Greetings
  2. The verb to Have (tener)
  3. Colors & Numbers
  4. Cognates (words similar in two or more languages)

This year we have access to an awesome website that we’ve used in Spanish class: senorwooly.com; students have used it in my (Sr. Clavell’s) classroom and in Profe’s (Sra. Finesseth’s) classroom. It’s a great tool for students to make catch-up work at home and it has games that keep students engaged in Spanish.

Today at Open House, you will be able to receive a syllabus for the class, which I will upload here later today.

Comienzo del año escolar 2017-2018

Hola!

Hope everybody is all right and that you had a great start to the 2017-2018 school year!

Just a reminder of how this school year is shaping up. We have 2 new Spanish teachers at Brody, meaning we have a total of 3 Language Acquisition teachers!!

Mr. Berube will focus on Non-heritage Students in all grade levels.

Ms. Finneseth will focus on 7th grade heritage, a 6th grade heritage class (on A days) and non-heritage.

Mr. Clavell will focus on 8th grade heritage students, a 6th grade heritage class(on A days) and non-heritage.

Just a reminder of apps you can use to study at home are: duolingo, quizlet, and SpanishDict (Spanish dictionary).

Also, we encourage students to create a Sr.Wooly account so that you can see Billy la Bufanda and other awesome Spanish videos.

Welcome to the start of a new school year!

This year we have 2 new profesores Mrs. Finneseth & Mr. Berube!

This year, Mrs. Finneseth & I, Mr. Clavell, will be teaching our Heritage as well as our Non-Heritage students.

Next week, Mr. Berube, Mrs. Finneseth, and I will be giving more information on this website about our classes! Excited for this new school year!
